Art Boys Collection are not a progressive rock band. There is a moment or two of progressive rock-ness, however, and this is mainly in the organ of Walter Holz. However, that progness is limited to a couple of tracks, and even then it's hard to make a strong case for this as fact. I will say that a vague reference to King Crimson's "In The Court Of The Crimson King" can be made with "Stoned Wall," a very faint hint of Keith Emerson in "Flying Machine," and maybe some of the psychedelic touches of the bonus tracks would qualify as a proto-prog prog. But for the most part, what you have here a fairly standard and imitative early 70s 50s- and 60s- influenced pop rock. Admittedly, the Art Boys Collection didn't bill themselves as a progressive rock band, as they were a beat band, a style that has been mentioned more than once in connection with the early days of very famous British quartet. That is to say, The Beatles. The influence here draws not only on the band as a band, but the members of the band after the split in 1971. "Roll Engine Roll" is, but for the chorus, much like Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy," (which, interestingly enough, came out 1973; Stoned Wall was released in 1972). "Wait For The Days" hints at bit a George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" in the rhythm of the acoustic guitar, though otherwise this song is very psychedelic. Here as on the "Roll Engine Roll," vocalist Hans Joachim Holz also sounds like Starr. The upbeat rocker "Happy Woman" has the distorted guitar sound that Harrison adopted for 1965's Rubber Soul -- there are many references but "Drive My Car" is what jumped to mind. "Station Nowhere" is a mellow, dreamy, psychedelic, McCartney-esque piece.Divergent from this ex-Beatles fest is "All My Life," a chirpy 60s pop ditty as catchy as any of the more widely known artists of the period. The Kinks come to mind with "I'm Riding On An Arrow," a darker toned guitar based piece, with a psychedelically echoey chorus. "In A Foreign Country" is straight out of the 50s-era (I thought of "Silhouettes" by The Crests), and the Mama's And Papa's like "Jesus Said." The bonus track "Lemon Tree" takes this and the Byrd's and the folky based rock of the 60s wrapped into one. In fact, early Bee Gees come to mind, too. Chuck Berry should come to mind with "United Blues Generation" via the Beatles, and we know that Beatles admired the 50s rock of Berry. Actually, this piece sounds like the Mama's and Papas performing a signature Berry tune as if they were the Beatles. An interesting curiosity, well preserved by GoD as this was taken from a well-kept vinyl version and declicked using the Ceder NoNoise system – which I'm not contractually obligated to mention (and there's no contract anyway), but should since the sound quality is very good, and the source sounds true for the times. But, it's a fairly average, well played bit of nostaligic rock – they reference well.Rating: 3/5.

A mixture of somewhat shallow pop and beat music and good progressive tracks. This so far relatively unknown group from Andorf in Austria released one LP "Stoned wall", which is valued at around US$700 in mint condition by collectors, and, between 1970 and 1972, another four 7"-singles, the last two of which are included in the LP, with the first two being added as bonus tracks to the CD. This means that Art Boys Collection's entire works are featured on one CD. The musical transition period of the late 1960s, which took place in the USA and England, was reflected in the efforts of the five musicians a couple of years later. Next to a detailed story of the band in German and English, the 32-page colour booklet also shows full-page pictures of the sleeves of the four singles, a complete discography, an overview of all labels and other things.

This top notch Dutch band from The Hague had their pinnacle during the early Seventies when they delivered some outstanding 24 carat symphonic rock albums. EARTH & FIRE was founded by the twin brothers Chris (guitar) and Gerard (keyboards) Koerts in ‘68. Soon bass player Hans Ziech, drummer Kees Kalis and singer Lisette joined them. Unfortunately Lisette had to give up singing because of a serious eye-disease and Kees Kalis left. They were replaced by Ton v/d Kley and the beautiful, very sexy Jerney Kaagman. She was a discovery by GOLDEN EARRING singer Barry Hay, they knew each other from the blossoming rock scene in The Hague. When EARTH & FIRE had a hugh success with three Sixties poprock oriented singles “Seasons”, “Ruby is the one” and “Wild and exciting” (in ’70 all reached the Dutch Top 5), the band decided to become professionals. Gerard Koerts bought a Mellotron, this instrument changed the Dutch progrock history because EARTH & FIRE used it for a more lush symphonic keyboard sound. Eventually they developed a very unique progrock style (a bit similar to the French progrock band SANDROSE and UK band JULIAN’S TREATMENT featuring lots of organ, Mellotron, strong and sensitive electric guitar and distinctive vocals from Jerney Kaagman. And EARTH & FIRE remained successful with their single releases, the Mellotron drenched “Storm and Thunder” (’72, #6), “Memories” (’72, #1), “Maybe Tomorrow, Maybe Tonight” (‘73, #3) and “Love of Life” (’74, #2) all reached the Dutch Top 10. Also the albums in that era sold very well and gained worldwide recognition: “Songs of the Marching Children” (’71, reaching #12), “Atlantis” (’73, reaching #6) and “To the World of the Future” (’75, reaching #7) are considered as ‘progrock classics’, especially in Japan EARTH & FIRE is even more popular than FOCUS! Gradually their sound turned into more poppy, culminating into the success of the very commercial song Weekend, reaching #1 and remaining 13 weeks in the charts! Also the following albums “Gate to Infinity” (’77), Reality Fills Fantasy” (’79, reaching #2)), “Andromeda Girl” (’81, reaching #12)) and “In a State of Flux” “82) lost most of the symhonic ingredients. The albums “Song of the Marching Children” and “Atlantis” belong to the best of the Dutch progrock history. The epic title tracks from both albums (between 16 and 19 minutes) are recommended: the sound is very warm and melodic with lots of changing atmospheres, accelerations and surprising breaks. The one moment you hear a mellow organ, twanging acoustic guitars and a fairy-like voice from Jerney, the other moment there are bombastic eruptions with majestic Mellotron, heavy floods of organ and some fiery electric guitar work, topped by the powerful voice of Jerney. By the way, she has been married for almost 30 years with Bert Ruiter, former bass player from FOCUS...!

The legendary Serpent Power's sole album, a psychedelic masterpiece by David and Tina Meltzer. The Serpent Power was a San Francisco Band led by poet David Meltzer formed in 1966.Tasty mellow guitar work on tracks such as "Gently, Gently" , "Open House" and beautiful female vocals by Tina Meltzer. Excellent acid psych, particularly on the cut 'Endless Tunnel' which mixes western and eastern styles to great effect. RECOMMENED !!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fronted by San Franciscan poet David Meltzer, the Serpent Power was a sunshiny folk-rock group, whose songs were musical translations of Meltzer's poetry. They were first noticed by Ed Denton, manager of Country Joe and the Fish, when he saw them perform at their first-ever gig, a benefit for the Telegraph Neighborhood Center. This was in November of 1966 — Denton recommended them to Vanguard Records (Country Joe's label) and by 1967 the band was signed and had released their first and only album. The Serpent Power was formed by Meltzer and his wife Tina (who sang both lead and harmony vocals), and also included Denny Ellis and David Stenson on lead guitar and bass, respectively, both of whom had gotten their start with San Francisco folksters the Grass Roots. The band became a full rock outfit with the inclusion of John Payne on organ and Clark Coolidge on drums. The album, also entitled The Serpent Power, received a somewhat limited pressing and, despite featuring some excellent examples of folk-rock, the band never got that big, known mostly within the San Francisco area. The album's last track was a raga-rock epic which included electric banjo player JP Pickens, who stayed on as a permanent member as the band entered its second incarnation.Ellis, Stenson, and Payne left shortly after The Serpent Power was recorded, replaced by Bob Cuff (who'd come over from folk-pop band the Mystery Trend), on lead guitar and Jim Mocoso on bass. Although they continued reaching in ever-more exploratory directions, the band didn't record another album, and disbanded in 1968. David and Tina Meltzer went on to record another album, Poet's Song, under their own names.

Poseidon's lone 1975 album is one of the better German symphonic progressive albums I've heard, but taking it out of its national context, it still can't really measure up to the masterpieces of the French, English, or Italian scenes. While certainly not a masterpiece on the level of Halloween, Selling England by the Pound or Forse le Lucciole..., Garden of Delights deserves praise for re-releasing this document of a movement essentially an evolutionary dead end (Grobschnitt, SFF, and Nektar notwithstanding).
Poseidon evidently know their strengths, because most of the tracks show off beautiful guitar playing and surprisingly tasteful moog/organ/piano leads. Their major influence, overwhelmingly major at times, seems to be the folkier moments of Yes (i.e. "All Good People" and especially the "Nous Sommes Du Soleil" portions of Tales From Topographic Oceans). I also hear similarities to the acoustic portions of the aforementioned Pulsar album. However, Poseidon are a bit more poppy and hook-oriented than those bands. The band itself is a rather standard five-piece, consisting of keyboard player Tony Mahl, drummer Rudi Metzler, and three guys, Horst Meinzer, Theo Metzler, and Wilfried Sahm, who split the electric guitar / acoustic guitar / bass duties. Curiously, no one seems to be listed as vocalist, though it seems like it’s the same guy singing on all of the album's tracks. This may be a purposeful omission, because the vocalist seems to be the weak link in! the band. His voice is often weak and strained, suggesting that maybe he was just singing until the band found a dedicated vocalist. However, sometimes the roughness of his voice adds to the folky charm of the music, so some listeners may not mindat all.
Fans of progressive rock will mostly dig this album for tracks like "Swimming Against the Stream" and "Found My Way," which features nice acoustic guitar playing that slowly builds to a barrage of Yes-worthy Moog and electric guitar riffs. Some tracks like "How Heavy the Days" and "Cold Farmer" compare more favorably with 70's American album-rock, but even here Poseidon a few progressive twists and turns. Tellingly, the album's bonus tracks consist mainly of cover's of sounds like "Crossroads," John Barleycorn Must Die," "White Room," and The Nice's version of "America."
As you can probably tell, Found My Way isn't an album everyone absolutely has to purchase. But it is a darn good album, and will surely please fans of Yes and international sympho fans, as well as those interested in the evolution of German prog-rock in the 70's. Kudos again to Garden of Delights.

The exotic, mindbending sounds of Gandalf have long been one of the great lost treasures of the first psychedelic era. Featuring the breathy vocals and lysergic guitar of Peter Sando, the band's only album, a delight from start to finish, has generated a fervent demand for more of the same. Gandalf 2, is a return trip to the band's garden of earthly delights. A thorough search of Sando's tape vault revealed a fabulous stash of spellbinding demos and acetates, unheard for decades!
Not really the second album from legendary late 60s psyche group Gandalf, but a well-done collection of unreleased material and rarities -- finally released to whet the appetites of anyone wanting more! The first Gandalf album is a masterpiece in brooding psychedelia -- surprisingly gentle compared to most of its contemporaries, but with a depth that's really amazing -- and these other recordings follow in a very similar spirit, but offer a much wider spectrum in sound! Some tracks are slightly folksy, some harder rocking, others a bit sweet -- yet the music is all pretty unified, thanks to the breathy vocals and hypnotic guitar of leader Peter Sando. Almost all of the titles are previously unreleased -- and tracks include "Bird In The Hand", "Days Are Only Here & Gone", "Smokey Topaz", "Ladyfingers", "No Earth Can Be Won", "Over This Table", "Dance At St Francis", and "Julie" -- plus a few demos and live tracks too!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New York's Gandalf was one of the more original bands of the first wave of American psychedelic music. Their first and only album, GANDALF, recorded for Capitol in 1969, has become such a retro hit among record collectors that the folks at Sundazed Records went about finding some unreleased demos and other rarities to release as GANDALF 2. Subtle folk guitar picking, flutes, and the occasional bluesy turn complement the more rocking elements, and make for a cohesive and satisfying full-length album in its own right.

Reviews:
There are some pretty good songs on this disc, and they all all from records you'd have to pay a fortune to own, so this comp is a great deal and fun too.
~ By Gullbuy.

Wow -- they don't make 'em like this anymore. A semi-legitimate compilation at best and mastered from vinyl, Hippie Goddesses is a collection of psych-pop tunes from the late '60s and early '70s, all fronted by women. The women's liberation movement and the sexual revolution were in full swing, and this collection is sort of a distillation of those newfound attitudes. Of course, attitudes toward women have undergone many changes since that time, and most of these tunes are dated to the point that they would probably horrify any self-respecting riot grrrl at the end of the 20th century. That's a big part of the reason why this is such a great collection. Things kick off with Sally singing "Super Psychedelic Trippy Acid Technicolor," one of the most over-the-top tunes ever, on a number of levels. Sitar, super-fuzz guitar leads, tabla, and Sally's overdone vocals really do justice to the ridiculous psychedelic lyrics. And that's just the first track; they're all funky, excessively soulful, sometimes very psychedelic bits of fluff with a come-hither attitude that screams early '70s. "Come in My Mouth" by Tobie, replete with musical orgasm, truly has to be heard to be believed, as does Xaviera's (the Happy Hooker) encounter with "The Hippie." This collection is almost certain to ruffle the feathers of more politically correct listeners, but it could also prove to be the perfect antidote to the angry chick rockers of the '90s and beyond.

Named after a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon poet-monk, CAEDMON began as a trio of veterinary students from Edinburgh University in 1973. The group’s early repertoire consisted of traditional folk and spirituals, as well as cover tunes. The band expanded to a quartet the following year and managed to stretch out their touring career nearly six years before disbanding where they began (at Edinburgh) in 1978. The band’s only studio album came as a result of a self-financed and produced private label recording with a pressing of just 500 copies. The band miscalculated the length of their tracks and ended up issuing a single that accompanied the vinyl album and which contained what would become tracks 6 and 12 on the 2002 Kissing Spell CD reissue. The band has claimed PENTANGLE and FAIRPORT CONVENTION among their musical influences, as well as fellow ‘Jesus freak’ musicians WATER INTO WINE BAND, who they appeared with in concert on at least one occasion. They took much of the inspiration in their mildly spiritual lyrics from contemporaries such as LARRY NORMAN, PARCHMENT and AFTER THE FIRE.CAEDMON reunited in 2008 with hopes of making new music together, and are also working to collect and release some of their earlier unissued studio and live recordings. The band’s single studio work is generally highly regarded as a solid example of seventies Jesus movement music, as well as a classic acoustic prog folk album. ~ Bio by Bob Moore, aka ClemofNazareth.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1978, a small christian folk rock band in Edinburgh released a farewell album to celebrate six years of making music together. The album was made on a shoestring budget and only 500 copies were pressed. The musicians went their separate ways.Caedmon's privately issued 1978 LP, has since it's rediscovery in 1992, been established as an expensive collectors item, rated as the best folk-rock album ever made, perhaps 2nd only to “Mellow Candle”. The sublime sound of Caedmon results from an unusual blend of styles, the fragile female vocals, admirable use of tension and atmosphere, savage fuzz-guitar, art rock leanings - everything from exquisite understatement to frantic show-off musicianship - a classic, by golly! ~ Internet Source.

The bandmembers included Mick Taylor (later with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and the Rolling Stones), Brian Glascock and John Glascock (later of Jethro Tull). They were schoolmates from Hatfield and had been playing together as The Juniors (or The Strangers), a band they formed in 1962.Also part of this band were Malcolm Collins and Alan Shacklock. They had a record deal with Columbia. Their first 7" single (Columbia DB7339) appeared in 1964 (There's a pretty girl/Pocket Size). In 1965 the line-up was changed. Mick Taylor continued to play guitar and teamed up with Ken Hensley (organ/vocals) (later guitarist with Uriah Heep). They also added Joe Konas (guitar/vocals) and changed their name to "The Gods".In 1966 The Gods opened for Cream at the Starlite Ballroom in Wembley, London. A single (Come On Down To My Boat Baby/Garage Man) was recorded in early 1967. At this point the line-up included Mick Taylor, Ken Hensley, John Glascock, Brian Glascock and Lee Kerslake. In May 1967 Mick Taylor got a call from John Mayall who was looking for a new guitarist. When Taylor joined the Bluesbreakers, he left behind a faltering bluesband. The band sought to revive their fortunes on the club/college circuit. They relocated to London and secured a residency at The Marquee. John Glascock (bass) was replaced by Greg Lake in June 1967. The problem was that Greg Lake was too talented for the background role the rest of the band had in mind for him and in the Summer of 1968 he split to join King Crimson. The band had to re-group again and John Glascock was asked to return. With John Glascock back in the fold they recorded a couple of interesting progressive rock albums and a few 45s. Of their 45s, "Hey! Bulldog", the Beatles track, is their best known, and both sides have been included on compilation CD "The Great British Psychedelic Trip Vol. 3". The band played an imaginative amalgam of psychedelia and progressivism. Tracks like "Towards The Skies" and "Time And Eternity" from their 1968 album Genesis are full of heavy ploughing Hammond organ and distorted guitar riffs and Ken Hensley's unique and rather dramatic vocals add a further dimension. Most of The Gods' material is pretty typical late sixties pop/rock, epitomised by songs like "Radio Show" and "Yes I Cry". The compilation album The Best Of The Gods offers a good way to get to know the band's music. There are shades of Vanilla Fudge on their cover of West Side Story extract "Maria". On a few tracks like "Candlelight" and "Real Love Guaranteed" there is an inkling of the heavier sound Hensley and Kerslake would propagate in their next venture, Uriah Heep. The Gods were the successors of the Rolling Stones at the famous Marquee Club in London. After recording two albums, Genesis (1968) and To Samuel a Son (1969), they signed with a new record company, recruited Rebel Rousers singer Cliff Bennett and changed their name to Toe Fat which also lasted two years and two albums.

Best known for their rock & roll standard "Pushin' Too Hard," the Seeds combined the raw, Stonesy appeal of garage rock with a fondness for ragged, trashy psychedelia. And though they never quite matched the commercial peak of their first two singles, "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," the band continued to record for the remainder of the '60s, eventually delving deep into post-Sgt. Pepper's psychedelia and art rock. None of their new musical directions resulted in another hit single, and the group disbanded at the turn of the decade.
Sky Saxon (born Richard Marsh; vocals) and guitarist Jan Savage formed the Seeds with keyboardist Daryl Hooper and drummer Rick Andridge in Los Angles in 1965. By the end of 1966, they had secured a contract with GNP Crescendo, releasing "Pushin' Too Hard" as their first single. The song climbed into the Top 40 early in 1967, and the group immediately released two sound-alike singles, "Mr. Farmer" and "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," in an attempt to replicate their success; the latter came the closest to being a hit, just missing the Top 40. While their singles were garage punk, the Seeds attempted to branch out into improvisational blues-rock and psychedelia on their first two albums, The Seeds (1966) and Web of Sound (1966). With their third album, Future (1967), the band attempted a psychedelic concept album in the vein of Sgt. Pepper's. While the record reached the Top 100 and spawned the minor hit "A Thousand Shadows," it didn't become a hit. Two other albums — Raw & Alive: The Seeds in Concert at Merlin's Music Box (1968) and A Full Spoon of Seedy Blues (1969), which was credited to the Sky Saxon Blues Band — were released at the end of the decade, but both were ignored. The Seeds broke up shortly afterward.
During the early '70s, Saxon led a number of bands before retreating from society and moving to Hawaii. Savage became a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. A collection of rarities and alternate takes, Fallin' off the Edge, was released in 1977.
~ Biography by: Stephen Thomas Erlewine.

The title track to this collection of rarities and alternate takes, "Fallin' off the Edge (Of My Mind)," is, improbably enough, a psychedelic hoe-down. Literally. Sure, the lyrics are suitably mind-bending, but Jan Savage's guitar playing is pure country. It works in spite of itself, but is hardly representative of the rest of the material (it's the only song co-written by Kim Fowley). It also proves that, contrary to popular belief, the Seeds did have other musical interests beyond psych, garage, and blues. "Daisy Mae," the B-side to "Can't Seem to Make You Mine," is another oddity. In it, Sky Saxon (b. Richard Marsh) wraps his wavery, sandpaper-edged tenor around an R&B number that sounds like a cross between Buddy Holly and Little Richard. The other numbers adhere to a more traditional psych standard. They include alternate versions of "Wind Blows Your Hair" (plus a reprise), "Nobody Spoil My Fun," and "Pushin' Too Hard," their signature hit. Although there's no topping their first two releases, Seeds and Web of Sound, fans are sure to find Fallin' off the Edge of interest.

Info:
Meic Stevens may not be a familiar name in much of the world, but in his native Wales the singer-songwriter's stature is often compared to that of Bob Dylan. A local legend whose psych-folk influence can be heard in such contemporary Welsh groups as Super Furry Animals and Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Stevens also founded his country's first independent record company, the estimable Sain label.
Stevens sang mostly in his native language, a political act not unlike speaking Basque in Spain or Cherokee in the U.S. His one English-language album is 1970's Outlander, an outstanding marriage of musicianship and eclecticism. Arising from the same fertile soil as the work of the late-'60s icons, Stevens's album nonetheless manages to avoid easy comparisons. Its jazz-Indo-psych ragas merge seamlessly with its acid folksongs and Dylan-esque meditations on relationships and politics. Performed by a remarkable cast of musicians hand-picked by English rock tastemaker Ian Samwell, Outlander was created with a minimum of rehearsal and consists largely of first takes.
Greeted with critical acclaim upon Outlander's U.K. release, Stevens traveled Stateside for a two-week tour in the summer of 1970. But the album never crossed the Atlantic; its very first U.S. release is this expanded, remastered Rhino Handmade issue. Copies of the LP have fetched upwards of $500 on the collectors' market, a testimony to the enduring quality of its songs.
Now, fans can enjoy the original album in its entirety, along with nine bonus tracks, including outtakes, alternate versions, and the 1970 B-side "Blue Sleep." Outlander is available as an individually numbered limited edition of 2,500 copies. greetings...

The band called Twentieth Century Zoo hailed from the same Arizona desert land that spawned Phil and the Frantics, Kennelmus, and Alice Cooper's original band, the Spiders. This 'shroom fest includes their lone album for Vault, rare early singles (nice versions of "Tossin' and Turnin'" and the early version of "Love in Your Face"), and the requisite unissued demos, all recorded between 1966 to 1968. Another great psychedelic chunk of garage band gets trippy, reissued back from obscurity.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hailing from the same gila monster-infested Arizona desert wilderness that produced an unlikely harvest of fertile bands (Alice Cooper's Spiders, Kennelmus, Phil & The Frantics) the Twentieth Century Zoo were the paradigm of what was happening to music as 1966 blossomed into 1967-68. These Phoenix shroom-heads stirred the savage fuzzback-laced sounds of the garage generation into the brain-baking trippiness of the emerging SF ballroom scene and made a concoction all their own. Includes the entire scarce Vault-label album, obscenely rare early single sides, unissued cuts and more!
~ Review by ChrisGoesRocks/s.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recorded in Los Angeles, this is a fair album. It's predominantly bluesy with a splattering of sound effects. The 'A' side to their first 45 was re-recorded when they signed to Vault in 1969. Their last, Only Thing That's Wrong is a non-LP country rocker. Thought to be a Los Angeles band they were actually from Phoenix, Arizona and were known until late 1967 as the Bittersweets, releasing three locally successful and now sought-after 45s before they added Ladd (from the Laser Beats) to the line-up and changed their name. Bennett was drafted late 1967 and replaced by Randy Wells (ex-Sounds Incorporated/Solid Ground). The Sundazed EP features three of the four Caz 45 tracks - Clean Old Man is missing for reasons unknown. Still, a welcome reissue and a chance to sample their earlier rampant fuzz-heavy-garage sounds that were somewhat diluted by the time of the album. The Sundazed CD is recommended. Compilation appearances include: Bullfrog (45 ver.) and Only Thing That's Wrong on Mindrocker, Vol. 13 (LP); You Don't Remember (45 ver.) on Psychedelic Disaster Whirl (LP) and An Overdose Of Heavy Psych (CD); Stallion Of Fate on Filling The Gap (4-LP).

Reviews from lysergia.com:
Offering up a mixture of originals and popular covers (Bob Dylan, The Troggs, The Who), musically the set wasn't particularly original. With the band credited with half the material, tracks such as 'The Sky That Is Blue', 'Zepplin's Good Friday' and 'Yesterday's Child' showcased a tasty blend of tight, Beatlesque harmonies and surprisingly commercial melodies. It wasn't perfect with the band occasionally drifting too close to Mamas & Papas-styled MOR ('Gigi'). Far more impressive were the band's stabs at a harder rock sound, including the fuzz guitar and feedback propelled 'Where Oh Where Is Mother' and their vox-powered cover of Dylan's 'Baby Blue'; always liked the song's sitar fadeout. All told, the results weren't half bad; an album I pull out from time to time.
~ [SB]

The non-LP 45 track "Portrait Of Youth" is an excellent track, other than that I'm not a great fan of this outfit. The LP has covers of the Who, Troggs, Dylan and more. The band had an earlier local 45 as the Obvious on the Cheetah label. The band is often linked to Dragonfly, but we've been unable to find any obvious connection except the "Portrait" track and the label.

Another ELP-type of keyboard-fronted band. Nothing earth-shaking here, but well done of its type. Descends into silly circus-music at times, but there aren’t any cheesy classical covers anywhere on this. Oddly, there’s an inordinate amount of trumpet on this album, strange that no-one’s actually credited as PLAYING the trumpet!

45:
1(A) I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time/My Rainbow Life (Roulette 4742) 1967 A New York outfit.

"I'm looking somewhere for a new dimension, I'm leaving it all so far behind, Don't waste any time girl, step inside my mind...I'm five years ahead of my time". From the opening lines of The Third Bardo's awesome garage psych single of 1967, one knew trouble was brewing inside the youth of America. The barriers that seperated them from their parents generation couldn't have been pulled further apart. Later in the song Jeff Monn sings, "I'm doing exactly what I want to, Society can't play with my mind"- this is a true wake up call that these guys were out-a-site and from outer space. "Five Years..." is one of the classic cuts that emerged out of the underground 60's. Five Years ahead? Hell, was this really recorded in 1967? This is a brilliant garage psych burner and no doubt most people will only know the band through this one song. However, as good as this track is, they also cut a handful of others that were equally as good as their first nugget. Thanks to Sundazed for unearthing these lost tracks and giving them the spotlight they so deserve, we are now re-introduced to this bloody excellent NYC band. Vocals that shriek, guitars that glide in and out of "another dimension" and a bass line that pulsates like a heartbeat, The Third Bardo had it all and then in a flash, they were gone. Their cover of Rusty Evans' (from The Deep) "Rainbow Life" is just as awesome as their first single. It was in fact originally released as the B-Side to "Five Years". Imagine, being a teenager in 1967 and coming home with this 45! Woah! It must have blown people away for better or worse. Also worth mentioning is the 1980's Rhode Island band Plan 9 who do a killer version of "Five Years Ahead of My Time". ~ Reviewed by BlueMagoo - 20th September 2002
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Their name, chosen by lead singer Jeffrey Monn and extracted from the 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead', refers to a "return to reality". The inclusion of I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time on Pebbles, Vol. 3 (LP) has made it something of a classic among collectors of psychedelic punk. Deservedly so in view of its haunting intro and fine fuzztone guitar work. Subsequently it has resurfaced on other compilations:- Born Bad (The Songs The Cramps Taught Us), Songs We Taught The Cramps, Nuggets Box (4-CD), Pebbles Vol. 3 (CD), Trash Box (5-CD) and Best of Pebbles, Vol.1 (LP & CD). Rusty Evans of The Deep/Freak Scene wrote the 45 for The Third Bardo along with songwriter Victoria Pike, who was married to The Third Bardo's producer Teddy Randazzo (of Roulette Records) at the time. The excellent flip side of the 45 can also be heard on Vile Vinyl, Vol.2 (LP) and Magic Carpet Ride (LP) whilst another version of it appears on Freak Scene's Psychedelic Psoul LP. If that wasn't enough, David Walters (author of the excellent "Children of Nuggets" book) has pointed out that the version of My Rainbow Life on Glimpses, Vol. 4 (LP) is an acetate version, 20 seconds shorter than the final single and with a different mix! Both sides of the 45 can also be now heard on Psychedelic Microdots Of The Sixties, Vol. 3 (CD). In the early seventies, their lead singer Neufeld released an album under another pseudonym, Chris Moon. In the 1980s The Nomads did a fine cover version of I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time and Kenne Highland's Majestic Gizmos reworked it into He's Five Beers Ahead Of Your Time (!) on the LP of that name. In 1999, Rusty Evans has helped re-record I'm Five Years Ahead Of My Time, My Rainbow Life and a number of other tracks with his son's band Kaos. Although currently unreleased, the new recordings are great, capturing the spirit of the originals. Rusty may also be writing some new material for The Third Bardo themselves, who played live again on May 16th 1999 with a line-up of Jeff Moon aka Neufeld, Damian Kelly and Ricky GoldClang from the original band. As for former drummer Bruce Ginsburg, his whereabouts are unknown - somewhere in California, whilst Richie Seslowe sadly died of a drug overdose in the eighties.

Morita Doji (born January 15, 1952) is a Japanese psych folk singer-songwriter. Background She was 20 years old when a friend's death inspired her first album. High School Teacher) as well as in the 2003 TV drama Kou Kou Kyoushi 2003 (a.k.a. High School Teacher 2003), the song Bokutachi no Shippai from the third album A Boy was used as theme song. 09. A Shower
10. Good Bye My Friend

Great Original copy of this dark-clad acid-folk psych album that reminds me of Bridget St John. Original copy that comes with 3 inserts, all with pictures and detailed lyrics. Dark, melancholic and ethereal female vocals. Stunningly great and getting rarer every minute. Released in November 1975. Will certainly appeal to fans of Comus, Asakawa Maki, Slap Happy Humphrey, Japanese psych heads and late night acid folk adepts. I cannot stress enough the grandeur of Morita Doji, just over the top brilliant. She retired completely from the music scene and public view at the beginning of the eighties and will never appear again in the public spotlights, so here is your chance to lay yer hands upon her melancholic, late night and utterly desolate sound spheres. Highest recommendation. One of the all time best female vox records to emerge out of Japan of all times!!!
